2003-born resident of Smolensk found a suitable ride through an online carpooling service and contacted the driver to make a reservation. However, an unknown individual transferred the conversation to a third-party messenger and then informed the resident that they were ready to provide transportation. Later on, the unidentified person deceived the resident and she provided him with the details of her debit card, which led to the theft of over 40,000 rubles. In the Smolensk region, a 1995-born local resident also fell victim to a scam while booking a trip. The complainant explained that she had found an announcement for a trip that suited her needs on an online platform for finding travel companions. The citizen arranged the trip with the driver, who then requested a prepayment. Without suspecting anything, the citizen transferred 5,600 rubles to the con artist's bank card. The complainants informed the police that they were aware of fraudulent activities through the media and conversations with police officers, but still believed the criminals. Law enforcement agencies are conducting investigations into these thefts. Inquiries have been sent to banking institutions to trace the movement of funds. The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Smolensk region urges citizens to be vigilant! When booking trips through online services, it is advisable not to make prepayments or pay the full amount in advance. If a companion insists on a prepayment, it is better to refuse their services and find another driver. Press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Smolensk region.
